Simply highlight a word and press command-d to have it show up in the dictionary window. Or type in terms yourself.
But its not just for translating between English and Japanese.
With web dictionary support included you can add your frequently used web dictionaries and search them. Simply go into settings, create a new Web Dictionary, take the URL and replace the search query with {query} and add youre done! Now with simple presses of command and the 1-0 keys you can access up to ten dictionaries with ease.
